“The true secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life."
– William Morris
At two years old, my grandson, Anthony’s world is a kaleidoscope of wonder and curiosity, where even the smallest delights - like cookies - become sources of boundless joy.
As I watched him gleefully savor his treat, his eyes alight with excitement, I couldn't help but be captivated by his unfiltered enthusiasm. Yet, like many adults, my instinct was initially to temper his excitement. After all, it's just cookies, I thought.
Anthony reveled in the simple pleasure of his cookie. And I was struck by a profound realization. Here in his delight over the ordinary, was a lesson in the extraordinary: the power of childlike wonder. This moment made me question: Why do we, as adults, often lose touch with this wonder, and what does it cost us?
The Power of Presence and Mindfulness
In our fast-paced, productivity-driven world, being present is a luxury that seems out of reach. Yet, children like Anthony, embody the essence of mindfulness, living with undivided attention and fully engaged senses. Observing a child’s interaction with the world, marveling at a ladybug, or savoring an ice cream cone, reminds us of the richness of living in the moment.
Contrast this with the typical adult mindset. Our thoughts are scattered, pulled in a thousand different directions by the demands of work, family, and a myriad of other responsibilities. We find ourselves constantly dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, rarely taking the time to savor the present.
Mindfulness, defined as paying attention to the present moment without judgment, significantly enhances mental and emotional well-being. Research, including a comprehensive review published in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2015,1 has found that mindfulness meditation can alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression. And improve cognitive functions such as flexibility and working memory.
Practicing mindfulness invites us to experience life's full spectrum, enabling us to appreciate ordinary beauty, find joy in simple pleasures, and navigate life’s challenges with grace and resilience, leading to true holistic wellness.
Fostering Creativity and Imagination
Children’s innate creativity and imagination often surpass adult constraints, reminding us of the boundless potential of a curious mind. They approach life with freshness, seeing possibilities where adults see limitations. This creative perspective, celebrated in figures like Leonardo da Vinci and Steve Jobs, drives innovation and progress across all societal sectors.
Creativity transcends individual artistic endeavors, influencing broad-spectrum innovations and contributing to societal growth. Encouraging this in ourselves involves creating an environment that promotes curiosity, experimentation, and play, nurturing the creative spirit that drives societal evolution.
Whether it's setting aside time for creative pursuits like writing, painting, or gardening, or simply approaching everyday tasks with a sense of openness and curiosity, there are countless ways to nurture our creative instincts.
"Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine, and at last, you create what you will." - George Bernard Shaw
In his book “Outliers: The Story of Success”,2 Malcolm Gladwell highlights the role of creativity in innovation and progress. He showcases how individuals with creative thinking have driven advancements in various fields. Furthermore, the World Economic Forum's “Reimagine Society”3 initiative highlights how fostering innovation and creativity can address complex challenges and contribute to a more prosperous, sustainable, and equitable future.
At the heart of creativity lies the ability to see the world with fresh eyes, and to perceive connections and possibilities that may elude more analytical minds. Children approach problems with a sense of curiosity and experimentation, unafraid to explore new ideas or make mistakes along the way.
In doing so, they expand their horizons and inspire those around them to think outside the box and embrace unconventional solutions. It’s through trial and error that true innovation is born and embracing our imperfections that we unlock our greatest creative potential.
In fostering creativity and imagination, we enrich our own lives and contribute to the collective well-being of society as a whole. Through our creative expression, we find meaning, purpose, and fulfillment. And through our willingness to imagine a better world we inspire positive change. So let us embrace the gift of creativity within each of us and unleash the boundless potential that awaits.
Cultivating a Sense of Wonder
"He who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead; his eyes are closed."
- Albert Einstein
In the monotony of adult routines, It's easy to overlook the beauty surrounding us. Yet, by adopting a child’s perspective, where every experience is imbued with amazement, we'll find that even the most ordinary moments are filled with wonder and magic waiting to be discovered. This rekindled sense of wonder enriches our well-being and enhances our connection to the world and each other, fostering a deeper appreciation for life’s inherent beauty.
Children, with their unfiltered curiosity and boundless imagination, are our greatest teachers, when it comes to embracing wonder. Whether it's the sight of a rainbow after a storm or the feel of sand between their toes, they approach each new experience with awe and amazement. They remind us of the beauty and mystery inherent in the world.
As we grow older, we often lose touch with this sense of wonder, allowing the stresses and responsibilities of adulthood to overshadow our ability to see the extraordinary in the ordinary. We become numb to the miracles of everyday life, taking for granted the marvels that once filled us with awe
Cultivating a sense of wonder isn’t reserved for the young or the privileged. It’s a skill anyone can develop regardless of age or circumstance. It begins with adopting a mindset of curiosity and openness and approaching each day with anticipation and amazement at the endless possibilities before us.
This requires us to slow down and fully engage with our surroundings. Whether it's taking a stroll through nature, marveling at the intricacies of a flower, or simply gazing up at the stars on a clear night, it's important to carve out moments of stillness and reflection in our busy lives.
In rekindling our sense of wonder, we begin to see the beauty and interconnectedness of all things, recognizing our place in the vast tapestry of life. And we find a renewed sense of purpose, joy, and gratitude that enriches every aspect of our lives.
So let us take a cue from the children in our lives and approach each day with wonder and awe. And so unlock the true magic and beauty of the world.
Embracing Playfulness and Joy
"In every real man, a child is hidden that wants to play." – Friedrich Nietzsche.
It's all too easy to lose sight of the importance of playfulness and joy. If we watch children playing, we're reminded of the profound joy in the simplest moments. Whether it's giggling with friends, chasing butterflies in the park, or building sandcastles at the beach, children approach life with a sense of lightness and spontaneity that we, as adults, often envy.
The spontaneity and joy evident in children’s play are not mere leisure activities. They are vital for well-being. Playfulness ignites the brain's reward pathways, releasing chemicals, like dopamine and serotonin, that promote happiness and reduce stress. It also enhances creativity, problem-solving, and social bonding, vital for mental and emotional well-being. Reintegrating playfulness into adult life can restore our innate capacity for wonder and happiness.
As we age, we often feel pressure to conform to societal expectations of seriousness and productivity, relegating playfulness to childhood. We forget that play is not just for kids; it's a fundamental aspect of being human, essential for our happiness and fulfillment.
How can we inject playfulness and joy into our adult lives? This journey begins with shedding our inhibitions and embracing spontaneity and adventure. Embracing a new hobby, engaging in playful banter with friends, or simply allowing ourselves to be silly and carefree can infuse our daily lives with laughter and joy.
Playfulness is contagious and fosters an atmosphere brimming with joy and positivity, uplifting everyone around us. We transform into beacons of light in a world often dimmed by shadows, reminding everyone of the inherent beauty and wonder in the seemingly mundane.
By reviving our childlike wonder and innocence, we reconnect with the essence of joy and spontaneity, fundamental to the human experience. Casting aside the weight of seriousness to celebrate the playful spirit within can unveil life's true magic and beauty.
Beyond merely revisiting the realms of childlike wonder and curiosity, we should actively immerse ourselves in life's marvels. Imagine approaching each day with the awe and curiosity of a child seeing the world anew.
Reflect on your interactions with children, those moments of unexpected insight, resilience, or unadulterated joy, and share these experiences. This sharing can magnify the influence of wonder and curiosity, enriching our collective journey toward holistic wellness.
Together, we can recapture the enchantment of childhood, infusing our existence with the endless curiosity, creativity, and joy we all possess. When we embrace the world's wonders, we uncover life's profound richness and beauty.

This is a beautifully-written piece, Tommesa! My husband and I had our two little foster children overnight for the first time last weekend. It was my first experience seeing the world through the eyes of a young child, and it was absolutely addictive. This alone seems reason enough to shoulder the demands of parenting.
